I signed an agreement with HarperCollins for worldwide book rights for The Pirate Queen. In accordance with that worldwide agreement HarperCollins has done a great job in licensing out translation rights and different world regions to other publishers. (Currently, the book has been licensed for translation into Turkish, Portuguese, Polish, and Chinese.) The UK and Commonwealth ‘region’ was licensed out to Sutton Publishing located in England in 2006. Since that time Sutton Publishing has morphed into NPI Media Group, then went into what they call ‘pre-pack’ receivership on 18 December 2007, when it was ‘bought out’ by the management (less its chair) in its new incarnation as The History Press. To say the least, this tortuous turn of events has not been exactly what you could call an author’s ‘dream’… or indeed a ‘dream’ for HarperCollins. It has meant that promotion of the book has been poor, stocks of books into the bookshops patchy, and the ability to tour successfully in the UK rather difficult. For any readers or bookshops who have had any difficulties as a result of the Sutton/NPI/The History Press metamorphosis, I can only apologize. I am hoping that HarperCollins will be resolving the situation in the UK and Commonwealth in the very near future. Please watch for updates on this issue over the coming weeks.
